Gully Boy may have got audiences all fired up about the hip-hop scene in India, and the University of Mumbai is taking things a step further by launching Introduction to Hip-Hop, a three-month-long certificate course in hip-hop.

The course, an idea introduced by Dr Sanjay Ranade, head of the Department of Communication and Journalism at MU, is set to start in June and will cost around Rs 5,000. It will be helmed by Yatindra Ingle, an assistant professor at the university who is also a rapper. Local artistes are expected to be part of the course as well.

As part of the syllabus, students will be taught about the origins of hip-hop which was used as a tool to speak out against oppression, violence, identity, culture and so on. The course will explore the political and racial aspects of the art form and include a study of women in hip-hop. Students will be required to submit a thesis on a subject associated with hip-hop and appear for a written exam in order to successfully complete the course.
