Yes, Amjad ‘Gabbar Singh’ Khan Was From Balochistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mentioning of Balochistan, which covers almost half of Pakistan, during his recent Independence Day speech has created quite a stir on both sides of the border. Pakistan is connected to India in more ways than one. With names like Atif Aslam, Fawad Khan, Ali Zafar, Imran Abbas already part of our film industry, Pakistan has a strong presence in Bollywood. But here are a few celebrities specifically from Balochistan who’ve ruled Bollywood:

1. Amjad Khan

Amjad ‘Gabbar’ Khan’s lines from Sholay still remain among Bollywood’s most iconic dialogues. The actor was born in the Quetta region of Balochistan on 12 November 1940.

2. Raaj Kumar

Raaj Kumar, who appeared in over 70 films over four decades was recognised for essaying the role of Nargis’ husband in Mother India (1957) is from Balochistan. The actor, who is fondly remembered for his role in Pakeezah (1972) opposite Meena Kumari, was born in the Loralai region.

3. Suresh Oberoi

Suresh Oberoi, who became famous as a character actor in 1980s and 90s, is also from the Quetta region in Balochistan. He is the father of actor Vivek Oberoi, who is famous for his roles in Saathiya and Company among others in Bollywood.

4. Kader Khan

Kader Khan spent his childhood in Pishin region of Balochistan before moving to Mumbai. Kader taught civil engineering at a college in Mumbai, before getting a break in Bollywood. The actor has been a part of many hits including Judwaa, Hera Pheri 3, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge.
