BJP Releases List of 36 Candidates for LS Polls

BJP releases list of 36 candidates from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Maharashtra, Odisha. Girish Bapat to contest from Pune (Maharashtra), Sambit Patra to contest from Puri , Odisha.

Congress Releases 7th List of 35 Candidates

The Congress party on Friday, 22 March, released the seventh list of 35 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

As per the list, Renuka Chowdhury will contest from Khammam (Telangana), Imran Pratapgarhi will contest from UP's Moradabad (in place of Raj Babbar), Preeta Harit from UP's Agra, and Raj Babbar from UP's Fatehpur Sikri.

Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee OBC Cell Chairman, J Chittaranjan Dass, resigned from Congress party stating that 'there is no social equality and respect for the senior members in the party.'

JD(U) to Field 15 Candidates for Arunachal Assembly Polls

The Janata Dal (United) has decided to contest at least 15 assembly constituencies of Arunachal Pradesh in the polls due on April 11, according to party's National General Secretary Afaque Ahmad Khan on Friday.

"We are giving party ticket to only capable candidates. Prominent among them include two sitting MLAs Techi Kaso, MLA of Itanagar (ST), and Dikto Yekar, MLA of Daporijo (ST) constituency," said Senchumo NSN Lotha, Chairman of the party's North East Election Committee.

Kerala's Director General of Police Jacob Thomas, currently in suspension since December 2017, has put in his papers so as to to contest the Lok Sabha elections.

Thomas had another 18 months to go for retirement. The resignation has been forwarded to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office and to the Centre.

Union Min Jitendra Files Nomination from Udhampur-Doda LS Seat

Union minister Jitendra Singh filed his nomination papers from the Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency in Jammu and Kashmir.

Accompanied by Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, Singh arrived at the deputy commissioner's office in a procession and filed his nomination before the returning officer.

After filing the papers, 64-year-old Singh, the Union Minister addressed a party rally.

"I am seeking votes on my development report card of five years, which is in itself a history of sorts in journey of development in this constituency. There is a long list of major infrastructure projects undertaken and completed," he told reporters.

OP Ravindranath Kumar, son of Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, O Panneerselvam filed nomination from Theni parliamentary constituency.

NCP Maha Vice Prez Bharti Pawar Joins BJP, Pravin Chheda Quits Cong

In another setback to the NCP ahead of next month's polling, its state unit vice president Bharti Pawar joined the BJP, while Congress leader Pravin Chheda also returned to ruling party.

The two leaders joined the BJP in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other senior functionaries of the party.

Pawar had unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Dindori constituency against BJP's Harishchandra Chavan.

Chheda, a three-term corporator in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), had quit the BJP to join the Congress seven years ago reportedly due to his differences with the then local MLA Prakash Mehta, currently a minister in the Maharashtra government.

Samajwadi Party Replaces Ghaziabad Ls Candidate

A day after the BJP announced the candidature of Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh from Ghaziabad, the Samajwadi Party on Friday replaced its previously announced candidate Surendra Kumar 'Munni' with Suresh Bansal.

The party took to Twitter to share the news of changing it's candidate for the Ghaziabad Lok Sabha seat.

In a statement, the party said, "Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has decided to replace the earlier announced candidate for Ghaziabad Surendra Kumar 'Munni' with Suresh Bansal."

BJP candidate VK Singh had won the 2014 elections from Ghaziabad.

Jagan Files Nomination From Pulivendula

YSR Congress Party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Friday filed nomination from Pulivendula constituency for next month's elections to the Andhra Pradesh Assembly.

Alleging that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was hatching a conspiracy to target YSRCP leaders, Jagan asked people not to get provoked.

Referring to the murder of his uncle YS Vivekananda Reddy, Jagan said the TDP government was trying to target his family and the party.

Shiv Sena Announces 21 Candidates for Maharashtra

The Shiv Sena announced its first list of 21 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, from its quota of 23 seats and retained most of the sitting members.

As per the BJP-Sena alliance, the two ruling allies are contesting 48 parliamentary seats in the state in the ratio of 25:23, leaving nothing for its five smaller allies here.

Actor Prakash Raj Files Nomination as Independent

South Indian multi-lingual actor Prakash Raj on Friday, 22 March, filed his nomination to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Bangalore Central constituency as an Independent.

Raj, 53, who hails from this tech city, is a popular actor in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films.

"National parties like BJP and Congress have failed the people. I would like to be the voice of the people," Raj said after filing his nomination.

The actor will be contesting from the seat against BJP's outgoing MP PC Mohan, who too filed his nomination from Bangalore Central seat on Friday.

The Congress is yet to announce its candidate from the constituency.

Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced its support to Prakash Raj.

15 Polling Stations in Mizoram for Tribal Refugees

The Election Commission will set up 15 special polling stations at Kanhmun village along the Mizoram-Tripura border to help tribal refugees living in relief camps in Tripura exercise their franchise for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram, officials said on Friday.

The tribal refugees, however, are yet to decide whether they would go to Kanhmun village to cast their votes.

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has said demonetisation was to "whitewash" black money, amidst reports that the current cash in circulation has jumped by more than 19 percent from the pre-note ban days.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami made a strong pitch on Friday, 22 March, for a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, lauding him for the air strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and saying he was the "only qualified" leader to ensure the national security.

Modi was an "efficient and strong leader", he said launching his campaign for the 18 April Lok Sabha elections in the state from his native district in west Tamil Nadu.

Panel Submits Report on VVPAT Slip Counting

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) on Friday, 22 March, submitted its report to the Election Commission on how many or what percentage of VVPAT slips should be counted in each constituency.

Opposition parties had been demanding that at least 50 percent of VVPAT (voter verifiable paper audit trail) slips should be counted and matched with the total vote count by electronic voting machines (EVMs).

National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Friday led the campaigning of joint Congress-NC candidates and said the alliance was aimed to keep India secular and "save" it from divisive politics.

Exit of Former MLAs Will Not Cause Political Loss: Congress

The Congress on Friday said the exit of five former Congress MLAs to join a regional party in Manipur will not "create any political loss" for the country's oldest party.

"We have efficient candidates in all the constituencies," a senior Congress leader said.

The five former Congress legislators had resigned from the party on Thursday and joined the North East India Development Party (NEIDP).

BJP Must Stop Pretending to Be Indian Army: Akhilesh

Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday told the Modi government not to pretend to be the Indian Army and said that governments which say they can't be questioned are dangerous.

"The sacrifices of our armed forces should never be questioned. To ask questions to politicians in a democracy is our fundamental right. This government needs to stop pretending to be the Indian Army," the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister tweeted.

BJP's First List in Bengal Pins Hope on Hardcore Politicians, Turncoats

The BJP in its first list of 28 candidates for West Bengal has pinned hopes on its veterans and defectors from the ruling Trinamool Congress to take on the Mamata Banerjee's government in the state.

Of the 28 candidates, 25 are new faces, with a thrust on active political workers rather than greenhorns from the glamour world.
