A total of over 1,900 voters exercised their right to vote in the "other" category in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections held in Andaman and Nicobar Islands on 11 April, NDTV reported on Sunday, 28 April.

But, the Islands have just nine transgender voters, according to the data published by the Election Commission.

The union territory recorded a voter turnout of 65.18 percent, a difference of about 4.5 percent from the national average of 69.5 percent.

It may be nothing more than a typographical error, the report cited an official as saying.

There was no official response from the Election Commission on the discrepancy in data.

The figure raises concerns as the numbers were apparently taken into account by the polling agency while calculating the voter percentage.

On Wednesday, 24 April, the Election Commission had published a data table that provides a gender-wise break-up of the total number of residents in Andaman and Nicobar who voted in the first phase of the ongoing elections, the report said.

According to the EC data, a total of 1,68,701 male voters and 97,311 women voters had cast their ballot on 11 April in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. In all, 2,07,208 out of the Union Territory’s 3,17,878 registered voters exercised their democratic right in the first phase of elections.

The seventh and the last phase of polling will be held on 19 May while the counting of votes will take place on 23 May.
