Uzma, an Indian national who was forced to marry a Pakistani, Tahir Ali, has been given permission to travel back to India, reported Geo News. She was returned her original immigration form, which her husband had submitted to the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday. She will also be provided security by the police till the Wagah Border Crossing as part of the order.

Uzma’s brother Wasim told ANI that Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs helped his family more than expected.

Sarkar ne humaari ummeed se badh kar madad kari hai. Sushma ji ne bhi hume bula kar tasalli di thi. (The government helped us more than we expected. Sushma ji called us over and gave us the confidence.)

Ali was denied a private meeting with Uzma by Justice Kayani, who instead suggested they meet in his chamber. Uzma, however, refused to meet him. Uzma also reportedly fainted in court during the hearing.

Uzma, a resident of New Delhi, on 8 May filed a plea with an Islamabad court against Ali, alleging that she was being harassed and intimidated by him.

In her statement, recorded before a magistrate, she had said that she came to Pakistan to see her relatives and not to marry Ali. Uzma had said she was forced into marrying Ali at gunpoint and that her immigration papers were taken away.

The case attracted attention on both sides of the border.
