“Myself Sathiya, born and brought up in small town in South India. My parents are farmers and illiterate. I am the first person to complete 12th standard in my family.”

This was what Sathiya Sundari wrote to the AskSHEROES helpline in March 2017.

A single mom, beautician and aspiring micro-entrepreneur, Sathiya has many dreams. But achieving them was a road fraught with struggles. An unsupportive spouse, demanding in-laws and the daily struggle to support her 10-month old daughter and elderly parents, was taking its toll, and she needed support, advice, ideas on how to move forward and take the leap.

What kept her going all this time was her deep love for her child and passion for her work.

True to her name ‘Sundari’, she had gotten into the beauty business, training herself at the Pivot Point Beauty Academy, and in sewing through Usha sewing schools. Typically, her work keeps her on the road a lot; a travelling beautician she delivers beauty at your doorstep in and around her village in Tamil Nadu.

And along with her travels her baby.

On Daughter’s Day, earlier this year, she posted this heartwarming picture on the SHEROES app with the message: “This is how we travel to work”.

Heartwarming as it sounds, we know all too well that the idea of a professional being accompanied with her child to her workplace, is not something we as a culture are empathetic towards.

So, after several conversations with counsellors at SHEROES and encouragement from the three-million strong SHEROES community as a whole, Sathiya decided to take that big leap – starting her own business, a beauty parlour that would allow her to serve more clients during the day and become financially stable, plus keep her baby close and safe, in her own space.

Such an enterprise, of course, needs research, commitment and capital. Having arranged for part of it through her life savings, Sathiya sent out a single ask to the SHEROES universe – “Can you help me in starting my business?”

#FundSathiyasDream, a crowdfunding campaign was set up to help Sathiya get a little closer to her dreams. And so compelling was Sathiya’s story, that the campaign was funded in just six days!

Sathiya’s passion and resilience has no doubt captured the imagination of the 3-million strong SHEROES community that believes in the “circle of support” – the idea that when women support each other, nothing is impossible. Sathiya is a true SHERO – passionate, resilient, unstoppable – and while her journey as a micro-entrepreneur has just begun, the sky's the limit when it comes to living her dream.
