It was a golden Sunday for Indian badminton stars Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth at the Indian Open Super Series event in the capital.

Saina had a lot more to celebrate over the weekend though, having earned enough points over the week to become the first ever Indian woman to top the world rankings.

The shuttler however did not take her foot off the gas, winning her first ever Indian Open title with an easy win over Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon.

Watched on by her teary mother in the stands, Saina won her match 21-16, 21-14 in just 49 minutes.

World No.4 Kidambi Srikanth made it two titles in as many weeks himself, clinching the Indian Open Super Series finale, just a week after bagging the Swiss Open title.

It was a relatively tougher outing for him though against Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. Dragged to three games, the young Indian eventually won 18-21, 21-13, 21-12.
