The Council of Islamic Ideology, a body that advices the Pakistani Parliament on Islamic/religious matters, recently acted upon a bill that claims to be the sole arbiter of women’s fate in Pakistan. According to the bill, if a woman breached the code of conduct laid for her, by her husband, then her husband is legally allowed to “lightly beat” his wife.

Such casual sweeping statements about wife-beating enraged the Pakistani millennials and shocked women across the globe unanimously. The appalling idea of normalisation of violence in households, caught the Pakistani writer, Zahra Haider’s eye the most.

Haider has been in the news for being a feisty feminist. She spoke about pre-marital sex and the lack of sex education in Pakistan which ticked her off the “good books” of self-appointed moral upholders of her country.

She associates personal experiences with “wife-beating” and corroborates personal examples with violence at home.
