This spectacular video footage shows an eruption in Costa Rica’s Turrialba Volcano captured by a camera. The volcano, which is only 50 kilometres from the Costa Rican capital San Jose, erupted on early Thursday morning.

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (OVSICORI) captured these thermal images which shows the roiling blast in fuschia and yellow.

This eruption was the strongest since October 2014. The Turrialba has presented eruptive episodes since 2010.

By dawn the ash cloud had been carried away by the winds and there was no remaining visible evidence of the explosion.
