Who Pays the Price of Triple Talaq? Real Women, True Stories
(An ordinance on triple talaq has received Cabinet approval. In light of this, The Quint is republishing this documentary from its archives. It was originally published on 22 August 2017.)
A batch of PILs were seeking a ban on the practices of Triple Talaq, Nikah Halala and polygamy. One of the PILs was filed by Shayara Bano, a woman who was given triple talaq by her husband. The other was filed by a Muslim women’s organisation called the Bhartiya Mahila Muslim Andolan (BMMA).
The five judge bench reached a decision with 3:2 split. While Justice RF Nariman called the practice “unislamic, unconstitutional”, the overall verdict termed the practice a violation to the right to equality. The three judges against the practice also concluded that the issue need not be referred to the Parliament.
The Quint met a few women whose lives have been torn apart by these practices. Watch the video to see what they have to say.
