A recent social experiment by UNICEF has come as a shocker, highlighting the society’s behaviour towards children (especially those in peril) who do not exude affluence, who reek of poverty and deprivation.

They were all telling me to go away.

UNICEF’S #FightUnfair CAMPAIGN

Anano is a six-year-old girl child actor. And the experiment had to be called off after she burst out crying as she ran away from insults and neglect.

The child may be an actor, but the situation she’s in is very real. Every day, millions of children living in poverty are ignored, pushed aside and deprived of everything they need to thrive.

The findings of the experiment

As a part of its #FightUnfair campaign, UNICEF decided to dress up Anano – first as a seemingly well-dressed and then, as a not-so-well-dressed abandoned child on a street.

The reactions to her presence on the street changed with the way she was dressed. Whereas the ‘well-dressed’ child was treated with affection and fond attention, Anano’s second look earned her neglect and even scorn.

Some people even signalled her to go away. It doesn’t need to be this way.

UNICEF’s 2016 State of the World’s Children Report is a call to action for the world to treat its least fortunate children the way it treats its luckier children.
