Rio’s dog owners and their mascots have embraced the Olympic spirit and taken part in the first ever Rio Dog Olympic Games on Sunday.

Say hello to Brazil’s first Dog Olympic Games. Man’s best friends and their owners have embraced the Olympic spirit by taking part in these Dog O;ympics.

Dogs of all breeds and ages competed for medals at a private dog club in Rio’s Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood. It was a delight to see them diving, jumping, swimming and running with people cheering them on.

Marco Antonio Toto, owner of the dog club and event organiser, said the competition’s goal was to socialise humans and their pets while celebrating sports.

Mima, a nine-month-old beagle competed for the first time and won gold for her performance in aquatic jumping. Mima’s owner, Aura Stella, said, “I didn’t even know she had all this talent.”

The event, which organisers hope to repeat each year, concluded at the same time as the end of the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
