'Elections are never won on economic performance.'

This is what senior BJP leader and MP Subramanian Swamy told The Quint's editorial Director Sanjay Pugalia. He said that elections across the world are won on ‘emotions’ instead.

Elections can never be won on economic performance. Narasimha Rao did not win on it, neither did Vajpayee or Morarji Desai.

Swamy said that in the last 70 years, the politics of dividing Hindus had become the norm, but that the BJP had turned that formula on its head.

For the last 70 years, politics was being played by dividing Hindus. BJP brought about a change for the first time in 2014. They united Hindus. The image of Narendra Modi came in handy and the campaign also contributed to victory.

His Prediction for 2019?

Upon being asked if the Opposition would be able to turn the tables in the 2019 general election, Swamy replied:

I know everything about the opposition. I have worked with them. In 2019, the BJP will form the government and will get more seats than before.

Swamy does not consider the BJP’s bypoll defeat a serious one. Instead, he expressed confidence that this time, in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP will touch 300 seats.
