The first day of the G20 summit, underway in Hamburg, Germany, saw violent protests as Left-wing activists vowed to disrupt the summit proceedings. Demonstrators said they wanted to draw attention to climate change, among other issues. Police used water cannons to clear a blockade by protesters on the banks of the Outer Alster lake, some distance away from the trade fair grounds where the summit is being held.

Host German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she hopes to find "compromises and answers" on a range of issues at the two-day meeting of leading economic powers. While there's little disagreement on fighting terrorism, prospects of finding common ground on climate change and trade look uncertain.
