At least 3 people drowned after a boat carrying close to 80 passengers capsized in Mahananda River in West Bengal’s Malda district on Thursday, 3 October.

According to the Malda District Magistrate, 28 people have been rescued so far and close to 50 people are still missing. The boat was carrying people to Katihar in Bihar from Malda in West Bengal.

The incident took place when most of the villagers were returning home after watching a boat race that is organised on the occasion of Durga Panchami every year at Mukundapur ghat.

A huge police force, along with officials of the disaster management team, is at the spot, and the rescue operations are underway.
