It's been over four years since Nirbhaya died after being raped brutally in a moving bus, but India continues to present a grim picture as far as women’s safety is concerned.

Even after fresh amendments were made to rape laws, data on violence against women paints a rather painful picture. In 2015, India witnessed a 35 percent jump in rape cases compared to the previous year.
(The Supreme Court on 5 May will pronounce its judgement on appeals against death penalty filed by the convicts in the 2012 Delhi Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case. An SC bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan will pronounce the judgement on Friday, 5 May – reserving the verdict after an extensive hearing on 27 March.
The four men convicted in the case, Mukesh Singh, 24, Pawan Gupta, 20, Vinay Sharma, 22, and Akshay Thakur, 29, were awarded the death sentence by Delhi High Court in March 2014. The Quint is republishing this story from its archives in light of the expected verdict.)
