A Muslim family from Dehradun set an example of humanity by neglecting social constrictions and raising a Hindu orphan boy. The family also got their adopted son married as per his religion's customs.

The family of Mouinuddin and Kausar adopted Rakesh Rastogi when he was 12 years old but never tried to change his religion or name.

Our elder daughter tied a rakhi on his wrist. He had no relatives and no job. We said if you don’t have any issues then come live with us. He thought that we were suitable for him. In today’s world, if there is no shoulder to provide support then kids often go down the wrong path.

Rakesh's marriage was a typical big, fat Indian wedding. Kausar received her daughter-in-law, Sonia, as per Hindu traditions.

We saw many girls for our son. Some of them rejected him only because he was living among Muslims. But Sonia’s family had no issues. Sonia and Rakesh also liked each other. We asked a pandit to determine a muhurat for the wedding. We also had the ritual of ‘tika’ with ‘mantras’. Pandit ji then finalised a date.

Rakesh and Sonia tied the knot on 9 February as per Hindu rituals. Rakesh said he will always be grateful to his foster parents.

I have a strong bond with my foster parents. What they have done for me, probably my real parents wouldn’t have done that. They got me married and gave me a house to live in. I used to live alone and would cry when I saw other people celebrate festivals. But my foster parents always supported me.
