Failing to spot the difference between ice and snow can often lead to danger. And no one knows better than this man, who, in the process of razing his snowmobile on a frozen lake, ended up falling after the ice cracked.

The entire incident, captured on closed circuit television (CCTV) camera, shows the unidentified man speeding the vehicle across a thin layer of ice. But in a matter of seconds, his vehicle comes to a halt and falls into the icy-cold lake.

According to AP, the man was later rescued by locals.

But hey, it’s not entirely difficult or dangerous to negotiate a frozen river. While the idiom ‘skiing on thin ice’ remains extremely relevant, a calculated approach to frozen ice can yield a matchless experience.

And Sweedish adventurist Mårten Ajne will stand testimony to it. Ajne loves what he calls ‘nordic skating.’ The mathematician uses his knowledge to ski across frozen lakes and rivers in his country, and has also written books on the craft.

Taking over the lake-edges, he covers the distance of 50-60 km daily in a zigzag direction. Leaving behind scratches of his boots, the skater shows his confidence and passion of the risk taking adventure.

Since there are layers of air and water under the lake, the frozen surface acts like a vibrating cymbal as Marten skates over it. A strange laser-like sound is produced while his bodyweight passes over the black turf.

(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
