1. Rs 72,000 a Year for Poorest 20% of Families: Rahul’s Poll Promise

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday, 25 March, outlined the details of his minimum income guarantee scheme, labelling it NYAY (Nyunatam Aay Yojana).

“The Congress party guarantees that the poorest 20 percent of families of India will get Rs 72,000 per year,” the Congress president said, adding that the scheme is “perfectly doable” with as many as 5 crore families and 25 crore people getting direct benefits.

Addressing the media after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet in New Delhi, Gandhi said, “People ask me what would be the minimum income line, the line would be Rs 12,000 a month.”

2. Jobless & a Dropout: The Main Accused in Gurugram’s Mob Attack

A heated argument over an alleged cricket game could have remained just that. But 19-year-old Mahesh Kumar, the main accused in the Gurugram violence, slipped into a fit of rage. He headed to his village and returned with reinforcements to vandalise the home of Sajid Siddiqui. While he was the first to be arrested on 22 March, a day after the incident, police are currently working on rounding up the others.

Sajid's home is buzzing with local leaders and mediapersons who are escorted to different floors by Sajid's family. They reiterate details of the brutal mob attack patiently. The broken glasses, windows, dented doors and blood stains are strewn all over for everyone to see. But about a kilometre away in Mahesh's neighbourhood, everyone is tight-lipped.

The Quint visited Naya Gaon, Mahesh's village in Bhondsi district, and met his relatives. Their initial reluctance to divulge details transformed into defending the accused and eventually abusing the Muslim family who their son had thrashed.

3. Josh Not High for Uri Martyrs’ Families Awaiting Govt Compensation

On 18 september 2016, four militants attacked the army brigade headquarters in Uri, killing 19 army personnel and injuring several. It was one of the deadliest attacks on army personnel. Families of the martyrs speak to The Quint.

While some of them don't want war, the others are happy about the air strikes conducted by India against Pakistan.

However, they are angry as the government hasn't fulfilled promises or provided any compensation.

4. Shefali Shah on Playing a Cop in Netflix’s ‘Delhi Crime’

Netflix’s new series Delhi Crime, directed by Richie Mehta is a fictionalised account based on the case files of the horrific 2012 gang-rape also known as the Nirbhaya case. Before its worldwide release on Netflix, The Quint spoke to lead actor Shefali Shah and the director about dealing with a sensitive subject, the research and censorship.

Richie has put in years of research to create the show, but one wonders what intrigued him about the story. “So I had a family friend in the Delhi police and he had seen my previous work and suggested that I make a film about this incident and I was resistant, I didn’t think it was appropriate, but then he said why don’t you read some of the material. So I read the material, met some of the officers and just as a person I was intrigued and then I got to know them and really started to understand their point of view on this, I started to feel compassion for them.”

5. Jet Airways Founder Naresh Goyal Steps Down as Chairman

Jet Airways chairman Naresh Goyal, and his wife Anita Goyal, stepped down from the airline’s board on Monday, 25 March, to allow the board to move ahead with a debt recast plan for rescuing the carrier he founded in 1993.

One nominee of Etihad Airways PJSC will also step down from the board, Jet Airways said in a media statement. Goyal will cease to be the chairman of the airline.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad is a strategic partner with a 24 percent stake in Jet Airways.

According to the statement, the board has also approved immediate funding support of Rs 1,500 crore by lenders via debt. The bidding process for new investors will start in June.

6. ED Opposes Vadra’s Plea to Quash FIR, to File Affidavit in 2 Weeks

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday, 25 March, opposed Robert Vadra's plea seeking to quash the money laundering case against him, stating that there was "wilful suppression of facts" and that relief could not be granted to him.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Delhi High Court that Vadra's petition is not maintainable and it is abuse of process of law.

The High Court has issued notice to the Centre to file an affidavit opposing the plea, within two weeks.

7. SC Issues Notice to CBI in Assets Case Against Mulayam, Akhilesh

The Supreme Court on Monday, 25 March, issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the status report in the disproportionate assets case involving Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and his sons Akhilesh Yadav and Prateek Yadav.

The SC’s notice came on a petition seeking direction to the CBI to place before the court or jurisdictional magistrate the status report of investigation carried out by the agency into the alleged disproportionate assets of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav.

“We want to know what has happened to this case? There is a status report of 2007. What has happened? We would like to know whether the case is registered?” the SC reportedly asked the premier investigating agency.
