In a video that has now gone viral, a two-storeyed house in West Bengal's Bankura city collapsed into a canal flowing next to it after heavy rains lashed the area. The incident reportedly took place in the Junbedia locality of the city on Monday, 6 August.
According to ABP News, no one died in the incident. The people residing in the house were rescued just before the incident took place, NDTV Bangla added.
One person has drowned in a rivulet in the Bankura district which received more than 200 mm rainfall in 24 hours, officials told PTI on Monday.
In Kolkata, Disaster Management department described it as a flood-like situation on Monday, issuing a statement saying the district had received 224 mm of rainfall in three blocks in 24 hours.
The statement said that a 70-year-old man died while crossing a swollen rivulet at Nagardanga village in the district.
The three affected blocks were Bankura II, Mejhia and G Ghati, the statement said.
Altogether 663 houses were partially damaged and 52 houses totally damaged in heavy rains, it said. Two relief camps have been opened in Bankura II block and two speed boats have also been pressed into service to undertake the rescue operations.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health was also requested to deploy medical team in the submerged areas.
More than 2,500 people had been affected and waterlogging has been reported from many low-lying areas of the district and several wards of Bankura town, a statement issued by the Additional District Magistrate earlier had said.
Local media reports also said that the road connecting Bankura and Mankanali has been washed out due to the rains.
