Days after one of its staffer asked a Khasi governess to leave on account of her ‘improper Nepali’ attire, the Delhi Golf Club on Tuesday apologised for the ‘unfortunate’ incident.
In a statement, the elite club said it is in the process of initiating ‘disciplinary action’ against those involved, while adding that the incident was being given a ‘political & cultural overtone.’
But neither the Khasi woman who was shunted out, nor her employer, have received an apology from the club. Speaking to news agency ANI, Nivedita Barthakur said that she has so far not heard from the club authorities.
Recounting the incident that took place on Sunday, Barthakur said two staffers of the club asked her governess Tailin Lyngdoh to leave, as she was dressed “like a maid.” On being told that Lyngdoh had come in as a guest, the staffers refused to budge. As Barthakur made for the exit, she heard the staffers mutter “Don’t know where such people come from.”
Sunday’s humiliation has left 51-year-old Lyngdoh heartbroken. She says in her entire career spanning over a decade, never did she have to face such racial insult.
