Households of Indian cricketers Punam Raut and Ekta Bisht were brimming with joy following the Indian eves’ thumping 95-run win over Pakistan in the ICC Women’s World Cup on Sunday.

Defending a below-par 169, the Indian bowling attack, spearheaded by Ekta Bisht staged one of the most stunning fightbacks to skittle out Pakistan for just 74. The left-arm orthodox spinner scalped five wickets for just 18 runs.

I’m really happy. At one point it looked like Pakistan would win easily. Looking at the way Ekta and the others bowled, I became hopeful of an India win.

Opening batter Punam Raut’s hard-fought 47 proved to be instrumental in adding respectability to the Indian total, with batting being an extremely tough task on the sluggish pitch.

Deescribing the struggles his daughter had to face in cementing her position in the national team, Raut’s father said she put in a lot of hard work to make a comeback after suffering through a lean patch for around 18 months.

People said that standing in the sun for over 7 hours would darken her complexion. Who will marry her, they said. She was not bothered as she was focused on cricket.

With the win, India have climbed to the top of the points table with six points. They face Sri Lanka in their next encounter on 5 July.
