'Escapism' , 'bad decision' or 'a positive step'?

Amid fiery speeches, mega roadshows and dynamic interactions, Rahul Gandhi’s decision to resign as Congress president soon after the Lok Sabha election results came as big disappointment for many.

Here's what people in Gandhi's constituency, Wayanad in Kerala have to say on his resignation from Congress president's post.

I think Rahul Gandhi’s resignation is a positive step because in a situation where most politicians are reluctant to let go of their authority and power his resignation demonstrated that it is sometimes good let go of that power. It will be a huge slap on Modi’s face. Those people (the BJP) used to blame Nehruvian and dynast politics of the Congress. Who will they blame now?

Mixed Reactions on Gandhi’s Resignation

While some people hailed his decision others disapproved of it.

It was really a bad decision for Rahul Gandhi to resign from the party leadership. But I hope he can save our nation and place the Congress party in a better position. And one more thing, the Congress doesn’t deserve a sincere person like him.

Another citizen of Wayanad, a street vendor who is not Congress but a CPIM supporter said:

Now that he has quit I see it as a sort of escapism. It was a bad decision. What is the difference now between him and other MPs? Rahul Gandhi was elected by the people of Wayanad because he was the Congress president. He has cheated the people of Wayanad.

While judging whether Gandhi was solely responsible for the defeat that Congress faced in the 2019 general elections or not, some believed that we cannot entirely blame the leader for Congress’ loss.

With his resignation, the situation is such that sincere politicians are leaving and the state leaders who are responsible for the Congress’ loss are continuing in the capital...The BJP government marketed every welfare scheme of theirs as well as the achievements of the army to sustain their rule. In such a situation we cannot put the entire blame of the congress’ loss in the election on Rahul Gandhi.

Many hoped that Gandhi could have done much more for the country and Wayanad, had he not resigned from his post.

Sajayan KS, a local journalist said, “Rahul Gandhi’s resignation from the post of party president will present a huge challenge. Wayanad had hoped that he would do more as the party president. Those hopes have set now.”

In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi won the seat in Wayanad by defeating CPI candidate PP Suneer with a margin of 4.31 lakh votes, but lost Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

However, It will be too early for anyone to say whether Gandhi's decision is good or not, India will have to wait to find that out.
