Normal life continued to stay affected in Darjeeling as the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) sponsored indefinite strike entered its eighth day on Thursday. Internet services remained cut off while all shops, except pharmacies, still had their shutters down.

I have run out of money, even ATMs are shut. My husband cannot stop working as his wages will be cut. There’s nothing to eat, our situation is really bad. There are no buses. The government should do something.
Gita Rai, resident

Vehicles have been prohibited from leaving the area, because of which several tourists remain stranded in the city.

Nothing is running here. Will go to Siliguri if we find transport. Have been stuck here for 8 days, I am feeling sick now. I have a wife and kid, how do we reach home?
Kishandev Mohanta, tourist

Meanwhile, the GJM has given a window of 12 hours for schools to evacuate their students on 23 June. Only school buses will be allowed to leave town during that period.
