The apex court has set 29 January as the next date of hearing in the Ayodhya land dispute case after Justice UU Lalit recused himself from the five-judge Constitution Bench. A new bench will now be constituted to hear the case.

As hearing began on Thursday, 10 January, senior counsel Rajeev Dhawan, appearing for one of the Muslim parties, told the bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that Justice Lalit, in 1997, appeared for former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh in one of the matters related to the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute.

The bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi included Justice SA Bobde, Justice NV Ramana, Justice UU Lalit and Justice DY Chandrachud.

The SC registry will need to give a report on by when will all documents be translated and the case will be ready for hearing.
