Ninety-five-year-old Huang Yong Fu, a veteran residing in the suburbs of Taichung, Taiwan, gets up at 3 am everyday to paint his village so that he can save it from destruction as part of a redevelopment project.

His colourful murals soon convinced officials that the village – later dubbed 'Rainbow Village' – should stay. His artwork has turned the village into a top tourist attraction since.

Huang, who is originally from Hong Kong and fought in the Second Sino-Japanese war as a member of the Chinese Nationalist Party, came to Taiwan with his regiment in 1949. "I'm happy that a lot of people come to see my paintings. I'm truly blessed," Huang says.
