It’s been 36 years since India won a medal in men’s hockey at the Olympics. However, some recent impressive form has raised the Indian team’s hopes of winning a medal in Rio.

PR Sreejesh, the newly appointed captain is banking on the experience of his teammates, especially Sardara Singh to carry the team forward.

It is a huge responsibility. But I have Sardara Singh to help me. We will take the collective responsibility and perform together as a team.

India recently took the silver medal at the Champions Trophy and finished third in the World Hockey League in 2015. The berth to Rio was sealed after they won the gold at the 2014 Asian Games in South Korea under the captaincy of Sardara Singh.

India is grouped with Argentina, Canada, Germany, Ireland and Netherlands, and will begin its campaign against Ireland on 6 August.
