How do you select a script? What is the process?

It just has to connect with you, You have to like it. I know it sounds basic but that really is the way it is.

You hear it and you think ‘I like this story, I would want to watch it and this is an interesting character. I can do something with this character’.

You’re going to star in Bharat now and it is with Salman Khan. You’ve acted with him in a lot of movies. How has your equation evolved with him from the first film to this one?

I think I have learned so much because experience is the best teacher. There has been a body of work between that. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve had a lot of practice, I’ve had trial, I’ve had errors, I’ve worked so much, I’ve worked with amazing directors. It’s a different feeling than it was in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya. I think out of all the films we have done together, Bharat has been the best experience as an actor for me.

When you’re on set, do you tweak the script or do you trust your instinct sometimes and not go with the director’s vision, do you ever do that?

See, the director is the captain of the ship. You can argue with him and I have.

I am a person who will have discussions, like me and Anand sir for Zero. We had a lot of discussions but the director is the captain of the ship, his word is ultimate and it’s your job to execute what is ultimately his conviction. A lot of the discussions have already happened before you get on set.

Katrina will be seen in Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bharat. She will star alongside Salman Khan. Bharat is a remake of the award-winning South Korean film Ode to My Father. The movie spans several decades and traces the history of India through Salman Khan’s character. Salman dons various avatars through the film, including that of a stuntman, a miner and a naval officer, and Katrina and Disha play his love interests.

Bharat also stars Tabu, Jackie Shroff and Sunil Grover. The film hits theatres on 5 June.
