Mahi Has Bared It All in ‘Roar of the Lion’: Kabir Khan
The Quint spoke to director Kabir Khan about his Mahendra Singh Dhoni docudrama series Roar of the Lion and his next Bollywood film with Ranveer Singh 83.
How tough was it for you to get hold of M.S Dhoni for doing such a series because we all know he’s a little camera shy, so how difficult was it for you?
I think the story is really big, and only when we knew that Dhoni would be ready to tell this story - because as I said, it is an unscripted story, it is not a story where we are casting an actor to play Dhoni. It is Mahi playing Mahi himself. And that’s the magic of the show. So after our conversations with him; and we had long conversations about the story and what we would be covering and he was very keen. He said “I definitely will talk about it.” And that is what made the show. It kickstarted with his consent.
Was there a specific part of the story that caught his attention and made him agree to do it?
Basically it is the saga. I mean look at their journey, it is an amazing journey. The most amazing IPL franchise and then they get banned for two years, thrown into the wilderness. We don’t know, they don’t know if they’re ever going to come back with that franchise but they do, and with a team that people laughed at saying it is “Buddhon Ki Fauj”. And that team against all odds goes on to win the IPL in 2018. So it is an amazing story of the rise, the fall and the rise again. That is what the story is about and that is what he has spoken about.
As obvious fans of M.S. Dhoni and Indian Cricket. Has Dhoni addressed the retirement question in your series?
No, we have not discussed that. As I said, it’s basically about his journey in the IPL, his journey along with CSK, with his fans, with his teammates. But no, we all hope that he never retires.
