‘Nukkad, the Teafe’, a cafe in Bhilai, Chattisgarh, is iconic in more than one way. Apart from serving coffee at a not-so-exorbitant rate, it employs people with visual and speech impairment and trans persons.
For the founder, the journey wasn’t a pleasant one. When he envisioned the cafe, his peers and fellow colleagues were classic naysayers:
When I started approaching transpeople, the feedback that I received from the community was not encouraging at all. Yet, I egged on. After months of hard work, here I am getting interviewed!Priyank Patel
The cafe is an interesting amalgamation of inclusivity and great food: one learns a lesson or two about respecting communities we ignore whist enjoying their food.
