Expressing exceptionally strong displeasure over the continued logjam in Parliament, President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday said “disruption is totally unacceptable”, asking lawmakers to ‘do their job’.

Delivering the Defence Estate Day Lecture 2016 in New Delhi on "Reforms for a stronger Democracy", the President said people send their representatives to Parliament to work for the country and not to agitate.

Mukherjee, a former Congress stalwart, expressed concern over the disruption of parliamentary work. He said it has become a "practice" by which the minority is gagging the majority in the House.

Majority never participate in disruptions. Only minority come to the well, shout slogans, stop proceeding and create a situation. The chair has no option, but to adjourn the house. This (parliamentary disruption) is totally unacceptable.

The winter session of the Parliament has been facing a logjam since it began, with the Opposition protesting against demonetisation and calling for a vote.

For God’s sake, do your job. You are meant to transact business in Parliament.

"Dharnas can be organised anywhere else," he said, asking all concerned to debate and discuss issues of public importance in the House.

The President said that if the members want to propose a no-confidence motion, they should give reasons for it and provide an alternative instead of just protesting. He added that disrupting the Parliament has become a practice and that Parliamentary freedom should not be misused.

He adds that debate, discussion and dissension is necessary and asked the members not to disrupt Parliament proceedings.
