BJP MLA Suresh Rana, from Uttar Pradesh's Thana Bhawan, has been booked by police for his controversial remarks during a campaign rally on Monday.

The leader invited fresh trouble for his party after he was heard saying that a curfew would be imposed in Kairana, Deoband and Moradabad if he wins the elections.

The three locations are Muslim-dominated regions.

In the video that is being circulated, Rana, who is also UP BJP's Vice President, can be heard saying that apart from the imposition of curfew, there will be a procession on 11 March from Shamli to Thana Bhawan with slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai'.

The leader, who will be contesting from the Thana Bhawan constituency, has also been named in 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots cases.

He later clarified his controversial remarks to ANI:

Due to the fear of hooligans, extortion, the people migrated from western Uttar Pradesh. There is no village or town where migration did not take place due to these reasons. So, I meant to say that if the BJP comes to power in UP, these goons, extortionists will migrate, and not the innocents.

Samajwadi Party leader Rajendra Chaudhary responded to the statement saying, “the BJP leaders must stay in their limits, else, democracy has the power to defeat them”.
