If you thought that you would have to bid adieu to Game of Thrones in 2018 (with the last and final, Season 8), then fret not! HBO has announced that its looking at four possible spin-offs from the award-winning series.
The network has hired four different writers to delve deeper into the world created by George RR Martin. The writers will "explore different time periods of George RR Martin's vast and rich universe," the network said in a statement.
Writers, Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island, Fox’s Minority Report); Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class); Brian Helgeland (A Knight’s Tale, L.A. Confidential); and Carly Wray (Mad Men) have been handed the job to take the world of Westeros and Essos forward. And two of these writers will be working in close association with Martin himself.
"We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in,” a spokesperson confirmed to The Times.
"Weiss and Benioff continue to work on finishing up the seventh season and are already in the midst of writing and preparing for the eighth and final season. We have kept them up to date on our plans and they will be attached, along with George R. R. Martin, as executive producers on all projects. We will support them as they take a much-deserved break from writing about Westeros once the final season is complete," the network added.
The TV series, written by DB Weiss and David Benioff has already gone ahead of George RR Martin’s book series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The TV show runners have introduced plot points that may or may not exist in the books to follow.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones will premiere on 16 July.
