If all goes well from here, Reliance could publicly offer its Jio 4G service to everyone next month. Media reports suggest that the official launch will take place on 15 August wherein data plans for as low as Rs 80 will be offered with 1GB data and free voice calls on offer.

The report goes on to state that Reliance will name its offering ‘Freedom’. The company has previously committed to launches, but backed out due to unknown reasons, but it is being said that the telecom operator finally feels confident enough about its progress with products and overall network infrastructure.

Reliance already has a slew of Lyf phones available in the market. The phones, priced from Rs 2,999 to Rs 20,000, come with locked Jio 4G SIM that gets bundled 3 months free data and voice call plan.

We checked with our sources on the timeframe of the launch, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Reliance is expected to deliver its results for the quarter sometime this week, and hopefully that will give us some clarity on what’s happening next with the Jio 4G.

If Reliance manages to offer 1GB data plans at Rs 80, then we’re sure of a massive overhaul in the telecom sector. The rival party such as Airtel and Vodafone will have to tweak their strategy so as to counter Jio’s aggressive stance.

It will be interesting to see whether Reliance sticks with its own Lyf phones for the Jio 4G, or if it opens it up for other operators as well, which has never been the case with telcos in India.
