Asus has set a benchmark for its competitors when it comes to gaming laptops in India. The company has been looking to target a segment, which has remained untouched for a while – affordable gaming laptops.

The Asus TUF FX504 gaming laptop is another breed of hardware that looks to combine superior hardware garnished with top specs. But, what most Indian buyers will be curious about is what has been compromised in the FX540 for it to not only sport a sub-Rs 1 lakh price tag, but also take on the challenge of running high-end games.

Here’s our review of the Asus TUF FX504.

What’s Good

The first thing that catches the eye is the design. The Asus TUF FX504 doesn’t give an impression of an affordable laptop, as it looks quite premium. But I wouldn’t call it pretty or sleek. At 2.3 Kg, it does carry bulk, but then isn’t a hardcore gaming laptop supposed to? No points deducted here.

The brushed silver finished with the sharply cut graphic does give it a very futuristic impression. Many might find a certain appeal in this while others can go shop for something that looks simple.

No RGB support for the keyboard. Bummer.

Though, the backlit keyboard doesn’t sport a full RGB spectrum of colours, I am not complaining. At this price point Asus has still managed to offer a keyboard setup which is gamer ready. The keys comes with 1.4 mm of travel, which I feel is ideal although the keys did feel a bit bouncy.

The sound output is surprisingly good. The sound is loud enough to fill mid-size room with sufficient bass. For a better audio experience, it would be better to leave the bass boost function on. While playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, the audio was loud and clear. Every bullet’s firing and character’s voice had punch and accentuated the gaming experience.

Considering this is an entry-level budget gaming laptop, which sports an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 2GB of VRAM, you cannot expect it to just breeze through heavy graphics intensive games.

It can manage some graphics, but only on low or medium settings. It could handle Black Ops 3 with easy on high graphic settings, but I feel it will struggle against the likes of Far Cry 5, Crew 2 or even the upcoming Anthem.

The FX504 is pretty cool, quite literally, as it has an efficient cooling system with vents on the rear and the sides.

The 1080p full HD display was disappointing.

What’s Bad?

The 15.6-inch display could have been better in terms of overall aesthetics and display quality. The chunky bezels on the sides tend to be a big distraction and viewing angles on the 1080p display aren’t the best.

Also, the display is on the dimmer side compared to competitors like the Nitro 5 Spin or even the newly launched HP Pavilion gaming laptop, in this price range.

The 4.1 x 2.8-inch touchpad has a Windows Precision touchpad that responds to gestures like four-finger taps to invoke the Action Center and four-finger swipes to reach the Timeline. But when I tried navigating with it the plastic felt slippery and cheap.

Being a gaming laptop, I was under the impression that the laptop would be able to support gaming running on battery power (on low graphics), but that wasn’t the case as there was a certain lag whenever I ran games without plugging in the laptop.

Verdict

Though Asus has offered a sturdy gaming laptop in the affordable segment with the FX504, it falls short of impressing in certain areas, which are vital for gamers and multimedia professionals.

The missing SD card reader and a slow SSD hard drive don’t make the bargain worthwhile. It does comes with the ability to run games with medium settings, but running games in high graphics mode would be pushing the envelope.

The display panel isn’t the most impressive and battery life could have been better. The TUF FX504 isn’t for someone looking for a good looking piece of hardware because it’s not. It’s tough, long lasting and comes with an efficient cooling system that will keep things running smooth.

At Rs 69,990, it is a decent bargain, but I would recommend that buyers chip in a little extra cash and go for the i7 variant of this laptop, which is priced at Rs 89,990. That seems like better value for money.
