When Xiaomi introduced its latest smartphone in China earlier this week, the company also debuted its AR-centric photo feature Mimoji.
This announcement did raise a few eyebrows, especially with the name resembling Apple’s version of AR emoticons called Memoji, which came into existence after Apple launched the new iPhones in 2018.
However, reports now suggest that Xiaomi is making its best effort to defend these allegations. The company has stated that its AR product Mimoji was conceived much before Apple introduced its product.
That’s not all, Xiaomi has said that anybody putting the “copycat” allegations on the product will face legal action on the matter.
The term Mimoji was first brought up when the company released the its AR product called Mi Meng in May 2018, which was four months before Apple showcased its unique software product.
That’s not all, Xu Jieyen from Xiaomi, who made the clarification about the use of Mimoji also said that package name of the APK for the AR avatar was named as Mimoji.
Xiaomi felt the need to detail about Mimoji after a Chinese blogger called Engaged Girl put out a photo on Weibo, comparing its Mimoji feature to that of Apple’s Memoji. This is likely to have come to Xiaomi’s notice, which seems to have forced the company into sharing all these details with users globally.
The Mimoji feature will be making its way to the new Xiaomi CC9 series, which was announced at a media event in China on 2 July.
