Winamp, the popular music player for desktop in the early 90’s is officially going to make its comeback as a mobile app in 2019.

This development was confirmed by Alexandre Saboundjian, CEO of Radionomy, which bought Winamp in 2014 in a latest media report this week. The player was last updated in 2013 so it’ll be interesting to see how Radionomy plans on modernising the popular brand in a mobile app avatar for Android and iOS users in 2018.

He asserted that Winamp launching next year will be a completely new version, which will cater to your local storage content, pick stuff from the cloud or connect with other streaming platforms as well.

In all probability, the new Winamp will work similar to how Amazon positions its Prime Music, that is available via mobile app as well on the desktop.

No further details were shared by Saboundjian on the upcoming Winamp player, neither disclosed which streaming platforms are likely to be accessible via its service network.

We also don’t know how they will design the new app for mobile users, something which isn’t their forte, after investing their resources in making desktop platforms till date.

Media player but only for PC and Mac in 2018?

Winamp was extremely popular for its user-friendly graphics, the flashy visualizations, but failed to make the transition from PC to mobile. This forced them to shut shop in 2014 and its revival, yet again on a PC seems like a weird move in this day and age.

We first heard about Winamp making a comeback in September which was notified via a report, showing leaked 'change logs' making it compatible with Microsoft's latest operating system. The player was also likely to be updated with support for latest audio codecs, and definitely change the way it looks.

It was also suggested that the new-look Winamp could get a premium version, asking users to pay for its service. Not sure that’ll appeal to users when they have options like VLC Player now but bundling with streaming services could work in its favour.
