If you want a smartwatch right now, brands like Apple, Samsung, Huawei and LG, among others, are there to assist you. Most of these offer features like call notification, message alerts, tracking your movements and monitoring your sleeping pattern.
But what we’re really missing with the smart wearables is the ability to make video calls and chances are that Apple could become the first one to do so very soon. Reports suggest that a refined variant of the Apple Watch could be announced in the coming months that will be equipped with a front-facing camera for calling support.
The second iteration of Apple Watch is not expected to make its mark any time soon (and will be further expensive), which is why dishing out the same watch with a minor upgrade could go a long way to fill up the vacuum between now and then.
If and when Apple Watch gets video calling feature, the likes of Samsung Gear S2, Huawei Watch and Motorola Moto 360 (2015) will lose their appeal. This will be Apple’s chance to switch back to its first-mover days in the industry, first reminiscent during the iPhone heydays.
The wearable space is yet to capture the imagination or interest of consumers with most of the people eyeing a relatively low-priced product like Xiaomi Mi Band. Interestingly, this year we stumbled upon a unique kids smartwatch at the CES 2016 that is set to steal Apple’s thunder with the first consumer-ready product to offer video calling option.
