Popular short video streaming platform TikTok has been raking the user numbers in India over the past 12 months. Most of them were expected to be on Android, considering how the app has become a hit with users in Tier 2 and 3 cities of the country.

However, it turns out that TikTok is quite popular among the iPhone user base in the country as well. How popular you ask?

This week we’ve spotted the app topping the charts of the Apple app store, even ahead of apps like WhatsApp and YouTube. According to App Annie, the app counts 39 percent of its 500 million global users in India, its largest market and by the looks of it, iOS has a significant say in its success.

As per a recent Similar Web report, TikTok caters to over 24 million daily active users (DAUs) as of 31 January, 2019 and quite possibly, we’re only looking at the growth achieved on Android.

This surprising growth on iOS could be related to Apple’s continued focus to sell its ageing devices like the iPhone 6S and SE in the country, both of which are also assembled here nowadays.

Apple has managed to bring down the prices of these devices, making it accessible to more users across the country, even when the company has found it hard to sell its latest XS and XS Max this year.

Talking about TikTok, its interactive format is something that enables a video’s reach to increase, with people able to comment or like a video that a user posts.

And this open access to comment has led to hate mongering incidents and has even been causing mental disturbance to people on the platform, which has finally come to the company’s notice. The company has promised to moderate the content, but appeals to ban the app have become louder as its popularity and reach grows in the country.
