I still remember the days, when small memory cards came in sizes like 128MB, but now you can buy memory chips of the same size, but offering 20X more storage than before. Samsung, Sony, Sandisk are some of the top names in this business, mostly preferred by professionals, simply because they offer more than a regular memory card.

Samsung has its range of EVO storage products, and the EVO Plus is the latest variant of the microSD card (along with SD card adapter) that is available to consumers in 2017 for Rs 12,999. You can choose between 64GB, 128GB and 256GB right now. So, what separates the EVO Plus from the cards that most of us buy?

What’s Good?

Samsung is a big name in the storage segment, especially with its EVO range of portable SSDs and internal drives. The EVO Plus range of microSD cards look like any other card in the market, except for its sheer durability.

This UHS-1 Class 10 memory card is not only waterproof, but also temperature-proof, X-ray-proof, and magnetic-proof, as claimed by Samsung. The delicate nature of memory card makes sure you handle them with care, but with the EVO Plus, you can be as careless as you want.

The reason why a 256GB storage card exists is because, you have phones these days, that either offer 128/256GB onboard storage, or let you expand the space to as much as 256GB. While most people say the price of storage devices has come down, but you also have to consider the speeds on offer, which is so much better than before right now.

The EVO Plus 256GB memory card offers data transfer speed as much as 86 MB/sec, which might be slower than the claimed 95MB/sec and 90MB/sec read and write speeds respectively, but still way better than its closest competition.

Putting that to test, we managed to transfer 24GB of assorted data from mobile to PC in less 6 minutes.

You can store more than 30,000 photos and over 12 hours of 4K recording video footage on this card, and this is where the transfer speeds show up their true strength. With over 10 years of warranty, Samsung has made sure the value of owning the EVO Plus 256GB trickles down over the years.

What’s Bad?

Why would anyone spend 13K on a memory card? Ideally, these high-range cards are mostly suited to professionals in the media business (photographers, videographers). These are the people who earn their living on equipments like these, which is why the durability and warranty factor catches their eye.

For everyone else, if you’re not going to shoot a bucket load of 4K videos, or shoot in dangerous conditions, and just want a memory card to store data on your phone, then the EVO Plus 256GB is not meant for you.

Why Buy It?

As clearly put it in the above section, Samsung EVO Plus memory card shouldn’t be valued with respect to its cost per GB (which is way higher than most card). The EVO Plus carries its strength in the form of durability (4-level proof), high-speed data transfers, ability to store heavy 4K content and lot more.

For Rs 12,999 (you can get it cheaper also), the Samsung EVO Plus is catering to professionals, and it is hard to recommend to casual users, especially for the price they’re paying to get this one. As they say, leave this one for the Pros.
