Take a close look at this image. A really close look. It appears like there are a few black dots at the intersections of the grey lines and that they are moving.

Although it looks like there are 12 dots in the image, your brain can never view more than 3 or 4 at a time.

Well, they are not moving and that’s precisely why this a is a pretty good optical illusion.

Shared by game developer Will Kerslake on Twitter on Sunday, the image took over Reddit on Monday, with more than 8,200 upvotes and 2,600 comments at the time of writing.

The image is static, with 12 dots in it. However, it’s almost impossible to view all the dots at the same time, even if your brain knows that there are 12.

There are several scientific reasons for why it happens, but none quite comprehensive.
