Microsoft, on Thursday, 6 December, announced that it will be rebuilding its Edge browser to run on Chromium, the same open-source web-rendering engine that also powers Google’s Chrome. In a statement to The Verge, Google has welcomed the tech giant’s decision.
According to The Verge, this means the Microsoft’s browser will be powered by Blink and the V8 JavaScript engines, marking Microsoft’s entry into the open-source community.
The corporate Vice President of Windows Joe Belfiore said that they want to make the web experience better.
“People using Microsoft Edge (and potentially other browsers) will experience improved compatibility with all websites, while getting the best-possible battery life and hardware integration on all kinds of Windows devices.”Joe Belifore
This will not change Edge in any way, just the websites’ loading experience will be more smooth and consistent.
The Verge reports that Microsoft has been planning this for at least a year and with the consumers going only one way, has given the move a certain push. With a move that better solves the compatibility, it makes its case better.
The update on Edge will also come for Windows 7 and 8 as well. And for the big hit, Microsoft will also bring the Edge to Mac! Although the date is not yet known.
It is good news that Microsoft has finally collaborated with Apple and Google.
