Apple on 8 September took the lid off its latest offering, the all new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, California.

Apple’s new iPhones comes with a host of changes which on the first impression are clearly improvements over its predecessors –even after the omission of the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack.

But are the improvements enough to justify an upgrade? Here’s what the experts have to say about Apple’s latest line of iPhones.

The Future in Disguise: The Verge

Reviewing the iPhone for The Verge, Nilay Patel says that the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are “aggressive breaks from convention while wrapped in cases that look almost exactly like their two direct predecessors.”

However, the new phones he says are a “decisive statement about the future.”

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are legitimately among the most interesting, opinionated, powerful phones Apple has ever shipped, and the most confident expressions of the company’s vision in a long time. iOS 10 is excellent, the cameras are better, and the performance is phenomenal. And the batteries last longer.

The Magic’s Not Gone, It’s Just Harder to See: Wired

David Pierce of Wired reviewed the phone and seemed enamored by Apple’s latest offering. Elaborating on the improvements in the new phones, David says that the iPhone 7 is more seamless, more open to third parties, and more connected to the rest of the Apple ecosystem than it’s predecessors.

So, no, the iPhone 7 won’t blow your mind with its design or features. It’s still a fantastic phone. And philosophically, it feels like Apple is throwing open a door. The iPhone 7 might not be a revolution, but it might be the catalyst for lots of them. Your phone will be better in a few months, and even better a few months after that. And wouldn’t that be exciting?

Apple Tees Up the Future With iPhone 7: TechCrunch

Editor-In-Chief at TechCrunch, Matthew Panzarino calls the iPhone 7 a phone for the future. He terms it as a phone that takes difficult decisions to bring the future closer to us.

Panzarino singles the latest iPhones as the best camera phones ever made, and adds:

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are the best iPhones ever. And they are probably the best portable cameras ever made. The combination of wide gamut capture with wide gamut P3 display means that you have quite literally never seen images like this from a smartphone camera before. And that’s not to mention the massive front camera upgrade. The phones are fast, capable and functional, with nice upgrades to speaker audio, water resistance and a more durable home button.

Apple Plays it Safe: Engadget

Chris Velasco from Engadget in his review of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus calls the devices as two world-class smartphones that skew more toward “safe” than “state of the art.”

However, he questions whether the bunch of relatively unexciting changes add up to greatness of the iPhones.

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are at once the most technically impressive smartphones Apple has ever made and the most divisive. After all, they’re excellent because of Apple’s renewed attention to the basics: the speed, the camera, the screen, the battery. None of these improvements on their own are terribly exciting, but together they make for a pair of phones that are more than the sum of their parts.

The Magnificent 7: Mashable

Mashable’s Lance Ulanoff argues that Apple’s latest iPhones is a worthwhile upgrade for anyone who is switching from a previous generation phone, especially since both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus now start at 32GB for the same price as the previous model.

I’m not sure if Apple’s iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus are the best smartphones ever, but these are easily the best iPhones ever, and they’re excellent upgrade options for current iOS customers.
