Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan Named New Facebook India Managing Director

Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan will join Facebook India as managing director and vice-president.

Ajit Mohan, the chief executive officer of Star India-owned streaming app Hotstar, has been chosen as the new managing director and vice president of Facebook India, Reuters reported on Monday.

Mohan, who has been working at of one of the biggest streaming app in the country since 2015, was promoted as CEO in April 2016, as per his LinkedIn profile.

He will look to join his new organisation by early next year. 

Mohan started his stint with Hotstar as the president and head in late 2015 and was promoted as the CEO in the first half of 2016.

He had started his career as a consultant in 1997, and has worked with firms like Mckinsey & Company and Arthur D. Little. Mohan has also been a columnist for Wall Street Journal. However, we were not able to find any of his articles on the WSJ website (hyperlink).

Before Hotstar was started in 2015, Mohan was already a part of the Star network as executive vice president and senior vice president, corporate.

When he was at the helm, Hotstar gained the media rights for streaming the biggest cricket league in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL), from 2018 to 2022.

In a bidding war, Star emerged victorious among the other 14 bidders with a massive Rs 16,347.5 crore bid.

Under his leadership, Hotstar also launched its premium services in the United States and Canada as well.

Mohan completed his education with an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School, University of Philadelphia in 2005. He also has an MA degree in economics and international relations from the John Hopkins University in Maryland, USA.

He had done his BSc from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

The appointment as Facebook VP comes after Facebook India has been functioning without a head for a year. It also marks the end of Mohan’s six-and-a-half year stint at Star network.
