The dark mode era takes another big entry into our digital life as Facebook’s Messenger app is the latest to get the option to go black, with regards to its interface.

Dark mode has become the go-to feature for app developers these days, especially since Google made a strong case for its inclusion at the software level.

Speaking at the Android Dev Summit with developers, Google cited multiple findings which confirmed that dark mode on Android phones uses less power and saves battery life. And Messenger users will be hoping their phone’s battery life also improves after they’ve started using the app in the newly introduced dark mode.

The feature is only available to users of the regular Messenger app, you don’t get the option to change theme for the Messenger Lite, which already is a toned down version of the main app.

Dark mode essentially changes the overall colour theme of an operating system (OS) or applications to the colour black.

How to Get Dark Mode on Messenger

  • Click on the profile picture to open the Settings page
  • Over there enable the dark mode option
  • Messenger has now entered the dark side

Messenger isn’t the first app to get the feature in 2019 and definitely won’t be the last. WhatsApp on Android in beta version has already been spotted with the dark mode option, and it’s likely to make its way to users in the coming months.

But more than apps getting the dark theme, everyone’s waiting to see if Android Q supports the feature natively for smartphones this year. The yet-to-named Android flavour will officially make its bow at the Google I/O 2019 in few weeks from now and we’re hopeful that dark mode is part of the feature list.
