Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) head RS Sharma has ensured that the regulator is open to the idea of free internet, reports The Times of India.

TRAI’s new consultation paper published on 19 May had spelled a looming threat to net neutrality. The paper proposed ways to increase internet access.

We have no objection in general if someone decides to provide content free, or at a discounted rate, if the same is made available to subscribers of all mobile operators.

TRAI had passed a landmark order against differential pricing after facing flak from the internet users a few months ago.

We are not compromising on any principle. Through the new consultation, we want to implement a toll-free equivalent in the world of data.

He assured that the new consultation will not run in opposition to the earlier order.
