Renault has unveiled its premium SUV Captur (call it Capture), which is likely to compete against the likes the Jeep Compass and the Mahindra XUV500 when it launches in a month's time.

Renault calls the Captur a crossover SUV that has been turned to work for Indian road conditions, highlighted by its class-leading 210-mm ground clearance. In addition to that, Captur will be made available in various colour schemes, totally dependent on how the customer wants to style it.

Captur will hit the market in both petrol and diesel variants, paired with 6-speed manual transmission. But more than the power under the hood, Renault was excited to talk up the design uniqueness of its upcoming crossover SUV.

The car gets innovative lighting, which is basically automatic DRL headlamps, along with floating indicators. Renault also claims that Captur is the, widest, longest in the C SUV segment, with sufficient headroom and boot space to pack up your luggage.

With respect to safety, Captur gets Dual airbags, ABS, EBD, Brake assist and ISOFIX child seat anchor. Other features mentioned were ruise control, speed limiter, Hill start assist, ear parking – sensor and camera to name a few.

The SUV competition is tough, but Renault feels that Indian consumers could use another option in the segment, which is where the Captur, after selling over a million units globally, is finally ready to hit our shores. But the question is, will Renault find the right formula to help Captur mix it with the rest (*cough Jeep)?

Well, we'll soon find out.
