Xiaomi has taken the smartphone game to a new level by unveiling the Mi Mix Alpha concept smartphone, that carries a screen to body ratio of 180 percent.

That’s not all, this device also packs a 108-megapixel camera at the back, joined along side by two other sensors. The Mi Mix Alpha was showcased at a global event in China on Tuesday, where it also announced a slew of other products.

But, the prospect of having a phone that is almost entirely made up of screen has its wow as well as the fear factor. Till now, we’ve seen phones trying to get rid of the notch on the front, by either going for a punch-hole selfie camera, or preferring the pop-up mode instead. So, while Samsung has gone for the foldable route, Xiaomi has thought of a similar design model.

The company is calling this a 4D Surround display, considering how the screen is covering 180 percent of the phone. In terms of the design, it gets a titanium alloy frame, with a ceramic back strip and the cameras are covered with sapphire glass.

Just in case you were wondering about the notification bar, that has been put on the edge of the screen, like what you can see below.

Understandably, Xiaomi hasn’t shared the pricing of the product, but it does pack the best available hardware. Powered by the Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB onboard storage, loaded with a 4050mAh battery that can be charged with the 40W adapter.

But that’s not all.

In the imaging department, Mi Mix Alpha gets the first ever 108-megapixel sensor at the back, paired with set of 20 megapixel ultra-wide and a 12 megapixel telephoto sensor.

Now talking besides the screen ratio, hardware in tow as well as the camera prowess, it would be hard not to look at the phone from usability point of view.

People have been extremely concerned about using phones that are mostly made of glass these days, which can look elegant but do become fragile.

How exactly are people supposed to use this phone (when it moves away from being a concept) without worrying about breaking the screen, which is there on both the sides. The Mi Mix series has shown what Xiaomi is capable of in terms innovation but it is unlikely that a form factor like this will truly become viable.
