Tata Motors Rolls Out Tigor EV – Its First Electric Car in India
Tata Motors has rolled out its first electric sedan, the Tigor EV, from its plant in Sanand, Gujarat. This car is part of the order it won from the Indian government-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). As part of this deal, Tata is to supply 10,000 electric sedans to the government enterprise.
The Tata Tigor EV will be supplied to EESL at a price of Rs 11.2 lakh each, inclusive of 12 percent GST and a 5-year warranty. This is lower than the bid put in by Mahindra for the E-Verito electric sedan, which was at about Rs 13 lakh with a 3-year warranty.
In the first phase of this order, Tata will supply about 250 Tigor electric sedans to the government, with another 100 expected to be supplied soon. Mahindra will also get a chance to supply some part of the order, as its bid to supply the e-Verito sedan is the second best.
Not much is know about the mechanicals of the Tata Tigor electric sedan at the moment, as Tata has not divulged the details. However, we do know that the motor is being supplied by a company called Electra EV, which makes electric motors and drive lines for cars. The company also supplies the 48-volt electric system for the Tata Motors – Jayem Auto Neo (based on the Tata Nano), which is under development.
A document available with the ARAI shows that the Tata Tigor electric sedan will be powered by a 40-bhp (29.5 Kw) motor. It has a gross vehicle weights of 1.5 tons, which makes it slightly lighter than the Mahindra E-Verito. It can carry five people, like a normal sedan. It has an estimated range of about 120 km per charge, but not much else is known with respect to charging times or battery capacity.
In the next few years, India is likely to see more electric cars roll out, as the government aims to sell only electric cars in India by 2030.
