Just weeks after it crushed the Chiron’s record 42 seconds 0-400-0 kmph run, the Agera RS belittled Bugatti’s Veyron SuperSport as the new fastest production car.
Buagtti Veyron (SuperSport) has held the record for being the fastest production car for a long time. Although, technically, it hasn’t been the fastest car since 2014 when Henessey’s Venom GT recorded a top speed of 270.49 mph (435.31 kmph). However, the Venom's record did not become official as Hennessy did just a one sided run to record the top speed. In order to set a new fastest car record, one needs to record the average top speed of back and forth runs of the same stretch.
However, it’s not Hennessey that has thrashed the Veyron’s record this time. Instead, it’s Bugatti’s latest nightmare - the Agera RS from the Swedish car maker Koenigsegg.
Koenigsegg recorded its fastest car run on 4 November, with an average speed of 277.9 mph (447.2 kmph) for both back and forth runs at a closed desert road in Nevada.
Previous record held by the Bugatti Veyron SuperSport recorded an average speed of 267.856 mph (431.072 km/h) while Henessey Venom GT’s “unofficial” record was a top speed of about 270.49 mph (435.31 km/h).
The 277.9mph figure - which makes the Agera RS the world’s fastest production car - was achieved with Koenigsegg’s factory driver Niklas Lilja at the wheel of the 1,160 bhp monster. It reached a top speed of 284.3 mph in the second run while the top speed recorded in the first run was about 272 mph. The car was running on the factory fitted Michellin Sport Cup2 tyres.
It seems that Christian von Koenigsegg is set on ending Bugatti’s era as the king of fast cars.
Just a few weeks ago, the Agera RS thrashed the Bugatti’s latest Chiron’s record of being the fastest accelerating car by clocking a 0-400-0 kmph run in an astonishing 37 seconds as opposed to the Chiron’s already bonkers 42 second time for the same!
The fact is that Koenigsegg has always been one of the most under-rated car makers of this era. Looking at the way Bugatti has been marketing its ‘fastest cars on the planet’ and knowing the potential of his cars, Christian von Koenigsegg must have finally thought of going public with his excellence and showing the world that Koenigsegg is indeed, the pioneer in hyper-car technology.
